Richard is skilled in all aspects of coronary evaluation, therapy and intervention. He specialises in the evaluation and investigation of breathlessness, chest pain, palpitations and hypertension.

He is one of the UK’s leading operators in renal sympathetic denervation (RDN) for resistant hypertension.

Richard’s outcome data for coronary intervention is outstanding. Between January 1st 2012 and May 2015 he undertook 587 coronary procedures/interventions with an adverse complication rate of 1.54% (MACCE – Major adverse cardiovascular or cerebrovascular event). The predicted event rate (MACCE) for his cohort was 2.54%. The radial artery (wrist) access was used in 70% of cases. These results are achieved with appropriate use of intravascular ultrasound, pressure wire technologies and rotational atherectomy.

In addition to coronary intervention, Richard maintains an active bradycardia pacing practice, implanting single and dual chamber pacemakers in addition to implantable loop recorders.

At a national level he has been a topic expert and clinical advisor to NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) and is a member of the BSAC (British Society of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy) working party on the treatment and prevention of infective endocarditis and implantable cardiac device infection.

He has chaired national meetings for the British Cardiovascular Society and Federation of Infection Societies and presents nationally and internationally on infective endocarditis.

Richard is an accredited appraiser of fellow consultants and has an active role in the educational supervision of trainee doctors. He undergoes regular yearly appraisal as per GMC guidance and holds a license to practice. Both colleague and patient feedback is included as part of this process.

Fundamental to Richard’s clinical work is the multidisciplinary team (MDT) where complex cases are discussed and alternative expert opinion sought for the benefit of his patients.
