Consultant general and interventional cardiologist


Dr Richard Watkin graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1998 (MBChB) and was awarded an MD (University of Birmingham) in 2004 for academic research. He is a full time interventional cardiologist at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and the Clinical Lead for Cardiology at Good Hope Hospital. He is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham School of Clinical and Experimental Medicine and is both a trainer and examiner of undergraduate medical students.


Richard is skilled in all aspects of coronary evaluation, therapy and intervention. He specialises in the evaluation and investigation of breathlessness, chest pain, palpitations and hypertension, with oustanding results.

Common symptoms caused by cardiac problems include shortness of breath, chest pain, palpitations or dizziness. These symptoms can arise when the muscle, valves, blood supply or the electrics of the heart are not functioning properly.

When you attend a cardiology clinic your consultant will take your history and do a physical examination. It is likely that they will request further investigations. These may include one or more of a number of different procedures.
